North side Evansville Walmart could provide economic boost

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Some neighbors are already signing petitions to keep Walmart from moving into an empty lot on the north side.

Officials say it's already zoned commercial and it's just been a matter of time before something moves in.

Walmart has it's eyes set on the 31 acre property but it's not a done deal just yet.

County officials fully expect remonstrators at next week's zoning appeals meeting and those voices will be heard.

Officials have expressed that to bring progress to the city and the county there will be inconveniences.

As County Commission President Joe Kiefer says, not only will the new Walmart create jobs but it will create new tax base for the county that it desperately needs.

"Retailers are interested in the north side of Evansville and that's a good sign that there's a lot of growth on the north side," says Kiefer. "Obviously if you drive up Green River Road you'll see a lot of new residential subdivisions. It's not surprising to me that Walmart wanted to be on the north side, with the new high school, the new middle school, with all the new residential subdivisions, they want to be able to capture that market."
