Posted: Updated:

Authorities are investigating a fatal accident in Hopkins County.

Stu Recke with Kentucky State Police says a vehicle and a bicycle collided on Island Ford Road in Madisonville around midnight.

KSP says 54-year-old Jerry L. Simmons, of Madisonville, was riding his bicycle east on Island Ford Road along the centerline and tried to cross from the center of the roadway to the westbound shoulder.

Troopers say when Simmons was going across the westbound lane he crossed directly into the path a car being driven by 29-year-old Brock Dunbar, of Hanson.

KSP says the impact caused Simmons to be thrown from the bicycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say Simmons was not wearing a helmet or any reflective equipment.

Dunbar was wearing his seatbelt and was not hurt.

The wreck is still under investigation.
