A Jasper utility official says a new downtown project will greatly reduce the city's energy usage in the area.
Electric Utility Distribution Manager Jerry Schitter says he's planning to replace the old city street lamps on the downtown square with new LED light bulbs.
Schitter says the new bulbs use less wattage, and allow for less light fixtures to be used in the area.
Altogether he says the new lights will reduce the city square's energy usage by 50%.
"LED is the latest technology, and it's been out for four or five years," said Schitter. "They've kind of worked all the bugs out. They've become more cost efficient. And it makes sense to use that type of technology."
Schitter says they will also be repainting the light fixtures, and that work will begin on them in four to five weeks.
