Formal charges are filed in shooting death of Indianapolis Police Officer Perry Renn.

25-year-old Major Davis Jr. is charged with murder with enhancement for use of a firearm.

Marion County Prosecutor, Terry Curry, says the intentional killing of a police officer is cause to consider seeking the death penalty but no decision has been made at this time.

Renn and another officer were responding to a call of shots fired last Saturday when they encountered Major Davis Jr. on the north side of Indianapolis.

Prosecutors say both officers told Davis to show his hands.

They say Davis had his hands behind his back and refused to show them until he pulled out an AK-47, which was legally purchased by Davis' mother in 2001.

Renn was hit three times by shots fired by Davis; one of the shots was fatal.

Davis was shot as well.  He remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Visitation for Officer Renn is Thursday from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. (EST) at Crown Funeral Home Indianapolis.  The funeral is being held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. (EST) at  Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Both are open to the public.
