LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville welcomed the commanding officer and three crew members of the submarine that bears the city’s name.
Taste of Kentucky opened their doors to show their gratitude to the sailors from the USS Louisville and offer them baskets and samples of bourbon barrel cake and Kentucky Derby Pie.
“It's a great day,” said John Hassmann, Taste of Kentucky owner. “We have been looking forward to having the captain and some of the crew from USS Louisville to visit. They do it periodically when they're schedule allows so they get to see the people of Kentucky appreciate the work they do so we're just glad to host them.”
“We really appreciate the Derby Pies they send us around Christmas time,” said Commander Robert Figgs, USS Louisville commanding officer. “I mean he sends enough where we're serving them for dessert three days in a row. So it was great. We appreciate it. Other companies, like Louisville Slugger, support the ship and so we want to say thank you.”
Every year, Taste of Kentucky sends pies to the crew of USS Louisville, a Los Angeles class attack submarine, for Derby and Christmas. Home port for the sub is Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Joining Commander Figgs on the Namesake Tour are Lieutenant Junior Grade Cody Rome, Master Chief Larry Williams and Petty Officer First Class Christopher Rieger.
