EPD investigating shootout that happened near daycare

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Police are investigating a shootout that happened near an Evansville daycare.

It happened in the 700 block of SE 8th St. around 6:15 Wednesday morning.

Neighbors say they heard a sound like firecrackers and police responded to the area within minutes.

EPD says witnesses told officers that a group of five young men was walking in the middle of SE 8th St. heading toward Washington Avenue when they saw Vincent Crews come out of an apartment.

Police say one of the men in the group pulled a handgun and fired a shot at Crews.

Crews, who police say has a valid firearms permit, drew his own gun and fired back. Police say Crews then went back inside the apartment and got another person with a gun permit, Damion Gibson, who grabbed a gun and went back outside with Crews.

EPD says at that point the suspects ran from the scene.

About 10 to 12 shots were exchanged, according to police, but there have been no reports of anyone being hit.

Police say no arrests have been made, but Crews was issued a misdemeanor citation for possession of marijuana after officers got a search warrant for the apartment.

The apartment is right across the street from the Kindergate Developmental Child Care Center.

Police did find shell casings in the lawn of the daycare, but no kids were outside at the time of the shooting.

If anyone has information about the shooting call the Evansville Police Department at (812) 436-7979 or the WeTip line at 1-800-78-CRIME.
