LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - One woman is dead after a fire broke out in her apartment Saturday morning.

Pleasure Ridge Park crews responded the fire in the 5700 block of Carnae Court around 10 a.m.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office said Georgia Farmer, 59, died in the fire from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries.

Charles Savage, a friend of the Farmer's, said the neighborhood is usually quiet. When Savage saw the caution tape, he told a friend, “Something’s real bad.” His wife received a call later that the woman had died, he said.

The victim’s upstairs neighbor, Debbie Burden, was in bed when a friend came to her door to warn her about the fire. By that time, she said, the victim’s unit was filled with black smoke.

“She was such a good lady,” Burden said. “I just want to know what happened.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Louisville Arson Unit.

Funeral arrangements for Ms. Farmer are still pending.
