LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Pyrotechnics illuminated a clear sky as Crescent Hill capitalized on fewer options for families to see a pop of red, white and blue.

Since the Waterfront Independence Festival didn't happen because of budget cuts, families flocked to the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration to watch a large fireworks show.

"That was fantastic! Especially with a family of four and two small kids," Corey Rash said.

Crescent Hill's Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration impressed first time families who usually head to the Waterfront Independence Festival.

"We didn't know of anyone else having them," Laticia Denu said.

To help handle the crowds, a free trolley shuttled families from Southern Baptist Seminary's parking lot on Grinstead Avenue. The shuttle runs from the parking lot to the festival grounds from 1 p.m. until closing each day.

"Trying to find parking in a busy area like this we probably wouldn't have made it. So it made it very helpful," Andrea Rash said.

More than 90 vendors filled the grounds around the Peterson-Dumesnil House where an estimated 20,000 people will check out the sights and sounds over the two day celebration.

"The organization here is fantastic and it has a real community flavor which is nice. I feel a lot safer here so I'm delighted we came," Lavay Lauter said.
