State examiner: Leg found in Ohio River may be male

Posted: Updated:

The Kentucky State Medical Examiner believes the leg found in the Ohio River in Henderson County may be a male.

We're told that is based off the bone structure from the leg.

That leg was found with a tennis shoe on its foot around 1:30 Friday afternoon in the Ohio River off Riverport Road.

While the leg is at the state medical examiner's office in Madisonville, two things could happen: They could try to extract DNA from bone marrow to match up with family members who have a loved one missing.

If the medical examiner can't help make an identification, we're told the leg would then go to the state crime lab in Frankfort.

Several agencies, including a dive team, searched the river for several hours Friday but didn't find anything else.

The Henderson County Sheriff's Office tells us they have no reason to suspect foul play but they are not ruling it out either.

The coroner's office says it appears the leg has been in the water for some time.

Sheriff Ed Brady says the investigation now centers around matching the body up with missing people cases to come up with an ID.
