Vanderburgh Co. Sheriff's Office warning of fake deputy scam

Posted: Updated:
VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office is warning of a phone scam where the caller claims to be a deputy with their office.

The sheriff's office says a victim told them she got a call from someone Wednesday, claiming to be a deputy, who told her she had an active arrest warrant for not responding to a court notice.

They say the caller convinced the victim to buy a pre-paid Money-Pak card and give the card number to the caller over the phone.

They're investigating as a case of telephone fraud and warn everyone to be very skeptical of any unsolicited caller who asks for money or personal information.

When in doubt, deputies say to get the caller's name, hang up and then call the business or agency, like the sheriff's office, back at a phone number you know is right.
