A plea agreement has been reached in the case of a Hopkins County woman accused of killing her boyfriend's son.
Authorities say 31-year-old Alexis Mayes was sentenced 14 years in prison after pleading guilty for her role in the death of two-year-old Kaleib Higgins.
In 2011, Mayes was originally charged with the murder in the beating death of her then boyfriend's young son.
Authorities say Kaleib died of multiple blunt force trauma to the head and body.
Her murder trial was supposed to begin next week.
Hopkins County Commonwealth Attorney David Massamore says the murder charge was amended to manslaughter because he believes no one would believe she intended for the child to die, but did intend to hurt him.
"I witnessed the injuries this child had sustained," said Massamore. "I witnessed his autopsy and it's one I'll take to my grave. You don't forget it."
Mayes is required to serve 85% of her sentence.
