(CNN) - Wednesday marked 50 years since the Civil Rights Act was signed into law.

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed it into effect before an energetic crowd in Washington.

The act helped end rampant discrimination based on race.

It is considered by some to be the most significant law produced by the Civil Rights Movement.
