Man struck with bat, another arrested for assault

Posted: Updated:

A Hopkins County man is accused of using a baseball bat to seriously hurt someone during a fight.

Sheriff's deputies say 40-year old Richard Mortellaro got into a fight with Jeremy Wicks at Las Vegas Mobile Home Park Monday night.

Deputies say Mortellaro struck Wicks in the head with the bat, and punched him, knocking him out.

Witnesses say Mortellaro and Wicks are friends but had been in an ongoing dispute over a dead bird.

Witnesses say Wicks would not leave the property so Mortellaro hit him.

"And when he come down, his head hit the concrete and it was a really hard hit. And it bounced kind of like a basketball. And his body just went limp and he was knocked out. And he was covered in blood," says Shelly Madison who witnessed the fight.

Jeremy Wicks is currently in the ICU at St. Mary's in Evansville and officials say he will be released in a few days.

Mortellaro is charged with first degree assault.
