LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Admissions and academics may also benefit from the national spotlight as the University of Louisville officially joins the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The university's exposure in the field and on the court has chemical engineering student Zachary Herde optimistic about the academic arena.

"We will now have tighter connections with universities like Duke, North Carolina and other research universities within the ACC that have always been in the national news for their ground breaking research," Herde said.

UofL's Office of Admissions attributes success outside of the classroom to its honors program and its most recent commencement.

"We'll have our largest number of baccalaureate degrees produced this year. That's a real core accomplishment," said Executive Director of Admissions Jenny Sawyer.

Contractors continue expanding beyond the confines of a school known for years as a commuter campus - a reflection that UofL isn't catering to locals anymore.

"The expansion of housing has played a huge role because it's allowed us to become a more residential campus. And that attracts students from across nation as well as international students," Sawyer said.

Students like Herde hope UofL's ACC membership will open more doors for research and partnerships.

"We'll be able to collaborate, be able to share information that we're all learning about and trying to understand so I think will be good for us because you can't improve unless you're with organizations that are better than you," Herde said.
