HCW, the developer of Evansville's new downtown convention hotel, announced Tuesday that it has received final approval of its franchise agreement. The hotel will fly the "DoubleTree by Hilton" flag.
Now that the city has secured the franchise agreement, they've cleared another big hurdle before the actual construction can begin.
Back in April, Dunn Hospitality filed a protest with Hilton.
John Dunn said he feared if another Hilton hotel were to be built in Evansville, business at his east side Hilton Hotel could take a hit especially with guests who are brand loyal.
Hilton conducted a market analysis but apparently decided the area could support two Hilton hotels.
Now, Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says they are working on getting over several smaller hurdles before full construction can begin.
"The area has been platted if you will, so the area plan commission is set to approve that area," said Winnecke. "The re-zoning for that area has occurred. The preliminary engineering on sewer work that needs to be done is underway. There's a lot of stuff that's happening behind the scenes while the franchise agreement's being worked out."
HCW says bid packages for the new hotel have been distributed and they anticipate receiving the proper building permits to allow the site infrastructure to move forward.
They say construction should start in 60 days which would put the opening of the new hotel in February 2016.
