Efforts are underway to restore the original entrance to the Springfield cemetery where Abraham Lincoln is buried.
Lincoln's funeral procession ended at Oak Ridge Cemetery about 150 years ago. The State Journal-Register reports that restoration on the entrance will start this summer. About a dozen businesses are donating labor and materials to save money on the project.
Officials say the original cost was estimated at $450,000 but donations have brought that figure down to between $50,000 and $100,000.
Cemetery officials say they'd like to have the project done by November, about six months before a re-enactment of Lincoln's funeral is planned for next May.
So far an old concrete wall has been cut back so a new reproduced archway can fit. Crews also are doing excavating work.
