ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - The older brother of a Hardin County teenager killed June 22 by an alleged drunk driver is in critical condition following an ATV crash early Monday morning.
According to Kentucky State Police, Brice Taylor, 20, was riding a four-wheeler on Springfield Road in Elizabethtown around 12:30 a.m. on Monday when a deer jumped in front of him at the intersection of Valley Creek Road. Taylor hit the deer and his ATV overturned.
Taylor was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital in critical condition. Police say his injuries are life-threatening. Sources tell WAVE 3 News Taylor required brain surgery.
"I can't imagine what they are going through," said Dee Neaderhiser, family friend. "It's got to be tough."
Neaderhiser has known the Taylor family for years. He works for David and Tonya Taylor, co-owners of the bowling alley in Elizabethtown.
He has watched their two children, Brice and Brianna, grow up.
"The whole family, super people," Neaderhiser. "Brianna, Brice, all of them. You couldn't find any nicer people. Good Christian family is what it is."
The family has been leaning on their faith to help them through the loss of Brianna. She was killed tragically last week by a suspected drunk driver on her way from a fishing trip.
"It was tough even being around here last week and now it is even tougher with something like this happening," said Neaderhiser. "It's hard to believe and it is tough to even do your job, you've got them on your mind and your heart goes out to them and what can you say?"
The Elizabethtown community will continue to rally around the Taylors as their prayers in mourning, now hope for recovery.
"It's devastating and heartbreaking because they are a very well thought up family in the area and for anybody to have this much on their plate it is just really hard for anybody in this area to swallow," said Trooper Jeff Gregory, Kentucky State Police.
Brice Taylor's sister, 17-year-old Brianna Taylor, was killed on June 22 in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Patriot Parkway and Deckard School Road in Elizabethtown, 17 days after graduating from Elizabethtown High School. Investigators say Michael Hilton, 34, was driving drunk when he slammed into the car Brianna was driving, killing her instantly and landing 18-year-old Mickayla Harig in critical condition. Doctors are hopeful about Harig's condition, but they say it remains touch and go.
Hilton is charged with murder and aggravated DUI. He is being held on $1 million bond.
On Friday, Brice Taylor talked to WAVE 3 News about his family's reaction to the crash that killed his sister.
"We think to ourselves, 'Why, why did it happen?" he said. "It's got to be for a better reason."
