EPD: Officer at fault in crash

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Evansville Police Officer was involved in an accident while responding to a call Friday morning.

Officer Steve Huddleston was one of two EPD units that were dispatched to the area of Vann and Rheinhardt.

Police say Officer Huddleston was headed east on E. Riverside and crossed the double yellow line to pass a car driven by Scott Meyer.  As Huddleston was making the pass, Meyer began to make a left turn into his driveway.

Police say he hit the officer's car and it went into a spin, ran off the road, struck a utility pole and some large shrubs before coming to a stop in a yard at 2233 E. Riverside.

Officer Huddleston was taken to St. Mary's for a possible shoulder injury and several abrasions.

Both officers in the other car that responded to the call and another witness reported that Huddleston did not have his emergency lights on when he was attempting to pass Meyer's car.

Investigators determined the primary cause of the accident was improper passing by Officer Huddleston.

He's expected to be released from the hospital on Friday.

Meyer was not hurt.
