Peoria officials vote to lure LST-325 away from Evansville

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Peoria, Illinois city officials passed a resolution to lure the LST-325 away from Evansville.

The city council voted 7-4 after an hour at Tuesday's council meeting.

In the end, they decided to make an offer to the LST in hopes of luring the ship to Peoria.

That offer comes with a stipulation though.

City officials said it would cost around $1.6-million to host the LST in Festival Park.

On Tuesday, the city council voted to set a cap and use $500,000 of city money, but would attempt to raise the rest from private sources.

That caused a lot of debate on the council floor - some not wanting to use city money at all. Others are worried what impression this would have with the LST board members.

LST Board Member Chris Donahue says he would like to make a decision on the LST's future by July 31.

Evansville's 10 year contract with the ship expires in 2015.
