SPARTA, KY (WAVE) - It's a big week at Kentucky Speedway. Beginning Thursday, the track will host a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, a NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Quaker State 400.
All the events make for a very busy time for Kentucky State Police in and around Sparta this week.
After some serious traffic nightmares a few years ago when Interstate 71 became an all day parking lot, Kentucky Speedway officials and KSP want to make sure they never repeat that scenario again and so far they say it's looking good. Added lanes and parking have made a huge difference in the last couple of years.
KSP Trooper Brad Arterburn said troopers begin to brainstorm for the next year when the last race ends.
"Planning for this event honestly, it's about a year round thing," he said.
This year there is bridge construction and other road work near Louisville to consider. It could certainly cause some problems and delays for drivers making their way through Louisville to I- 71.
So what's the best advice to avoid traffic headaches?
"Leave early," Arterburn said. "We have the best traffic plan, but if 100,000 people show up at once for a 7 or 7:30 race there's going to be a backup."
And be sure to fill up your tank before you head out.
Another idea is to make a day or even a week of the events by staying in a RV, camper or a tent. Concerts and other events are lined up during the down time around racing.
Social media will also make life easier for fans. Kentucky Speedway and Kentucky State Police will be providing constant traffic and track updates on Facebook and Twitter.
"So, if anything happens, a crash or any sort of backup whatsoever that's going to delay anybody, we're going to let you know in plenty of time," Arterburn explained.
Southbound construction as fans leave the track will be suspended for the weekend so people won't be bottle-necked into one lane on their way home.
Northbound drivers coming from Louisville should use Exit 55. Special parking credentials are needed for Exit 57.
If your involved in a fender bender and you can get out of the roadway, Kentucky State Police ask you to do it so traffic can keep moving.
