LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A long awaited school in Louisville's East End could be a step closer to reality.
Monday night the Jefferson County Public School Board voted to approve a new school in Norton Commons.
The developer of Norton Commons set aside 11 acres next to the new YMCA on Brownsboro Road for JCPS years ago, but it came with strings attached. The school system had until 2015 to build on the property or they had to give it back.
JCPS has been studying population shifts over the past several months and spokesman Ben Jackey said it is finally ready to go ahead and ask the board to approve building the elementary school, "This has been through very intensive research, taking the numbers, looking at the data and making sure there is a need there. While people in theory knew that the northeastern part of Jefferson County continues to expand, we needed the census data."
The new elementary school would be open to children from both the Norton Commons neighborhood and other areas.
Jackey said data shows that area of the county faces at least a 50-seat shortage by the 2017 school year.
