Union Co. man raising money with his demolition derby car

For most of his life Austin James has been fixing up cars and putting them in the demolition derby at the Union County Fair.

This year it's a little different, though. He's trying to raise money to help fight cancer and he's doing it one marker at a time.

Austin James' 1966 Pontiac Catalina has seen many miles. Austin is driving out the rest of it's days on a dirt track.

"The car was destined to do that," says Austin.

The classic automobile bears the scars of a rough old age and that of sharpie markers.

He feels now is a better time than ever to raise money, in honor of a close friend.

Austin says, "I'm not out there to win, but I like putting' on a show"

This year, he charged people one dollar to sign his car. He's giving the money to Relay for Life in Union County.

Austin's dad, Scott James, says he's very proud of his son.

"For the most part he's done well," says Scott.

Austin's good buddy, Robbie, will be in the car with Austin during the derby. They're in it for Robbie's dad, Kenny, who has terminal brain cancer.

"Its hard to see somebody go through that, so it was just something that I just wanted to do," said Austin.

He's combining a love for cars and friends to try his hardest to sign off on cancer.
