The first leg of a planned 11.5 mile walking and biking path in northern Kentucky was officially completed on Wednesday.
City leaders gathered to dedicate the pedestrian path that connects Newport on the Levee, the Purple People Bridge and the flood wall. It's the first phase of a $1.2 million project called Riverfront Commons.
The idea for the path was first envisioned 14 years ago. Once completed, Riverfront Commons will connect six southbank cities beginning in Ludlow and ending in Fort Thomas.
Representatives say the path will promote economic development along the northern Kentucky riverfront and offer easy access points to neighborhoods and entertainment districts in the area.
Riverfront Commons was funded through a combination of federal, state and local dollars.
