LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Ashlee Berry was headed home from work last week when she died in a crash which police say was caused by a convicted sex offender. On Saturday, a fundraiser was held for the family of the young bride-to-be.

Her friends say she touched many lives and will be greatly missed. "She was a great person, smile that lit up a room," said Ben Barker, manager of Troll Pub Under the Bridge.  "She was really something else."

Berry, 22, had worked at the Troll Pub Under the Bridge in downtown Louisville for only a few months, but in that time she made a lot of friends. She was from Las Vegas, but lived in Radcliff and was engaged to a Fort Knox soldier. They were supposed to get married in just a few weeks.

On the night of June 3rd, Ashlee was headed home from work and was on the Joe Prather Highway in Hardin County. It was the wrong place at the wrong time.

"She was absolutely an innocent bystander," said Kentucky State Police Trooper Jeff Gregory.

Ashlee died at the scene in this car crash, the last link of a terrible chain of events. Kentucky State Police say Kyle David Thompson, 24, a sex offender drove off with his ex-girlfriend and her three children at knifepoint. The woman escaped and called 911. Police say he took off in the van with the 3 children.  Police spotted the van and tried to pull it over.

"They did catch up to him somewhat on Wooldridge Ferry Road before the van turned southbound on KY 313," said Trooper Gregory.

That turn cost Berry her life. Police say Thompson crossed the center line and crashed head-on into her.

Berry's friends, devastated about what happened, decided to do something at the Troll Pub on Saturday for her family.

"Taking donations to a memorial fund that her family set up and 10 percent of all of our sales today (Saturday) will be donated to that fund as well," said Barker.

Donations for Ashlee will be taken until closing time on Saturday.

This week, a Hardin County Grand Jury indicted Thompson on charges of murder, felony assault, evading police and terroristic threatening.  He's slated to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.
