Homeland Security chief visits detention center

CHICAGO (AP) -

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (JAY) Johnson says his visit to a Chicago-area immigration detention center will help him as he reviews federal deportation policy at President Barack Obama's direction.

Johnson made the visit Friday to Broadview Immigration Detention Center after an invitation from an Illinois Democrat, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin. Johnson spoke to reporters after the tour.

He says meeting people who were soon to be deported and their relatives "brings home some of the heartbreak" for families separated by deportation.

Johnson called on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. But he adds that he's looking for ways to reform the system "within the confines of existing law."

Durbin and two other Democratic congressmen, U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, accompanied Johnson on the tour.
