COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

A judge on Thursday in Kenton Circuit Court sentenced former Covington finance director Robert Due to 10 years in prison.

Due pleaded guilty March 13 to 15 charges in connection with him stealing almost $800,000 in taxpayer money for more than a decade and forging documents.

Rob Sanders, Kenton County's Commonwealth Attorney, recommended a sentence of 15 years. Sanders told FOX19 he thinks 10 years for Due is too light.

"I think there's a stereotype, for lack of a better term, out there that public officials aren't held to the same standard that the average person is ... This sentence certainly is not going to do anything to change that stereotype," Sanders said.

Outside the courtroom, Due's attorney said he is thrilled with the outcome and commended the judge's handling of the case.

A Kenton County grand jury indicted Due on 15 counts, including charges that he stole the city's money for 11 years and forged documents. He had previously pleaded not guilty.

State auditors reviewed more than 66,000 checks, unveiling a scheme that allowed the former finance director to write 68 checks to himself, his spouse, his aunt and a vendor under his control totaling $793,127 from 2001 to 2013, Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts Adam Edelen's office said last month.

The city has a new finance director and has taken other steps to overhaul its finance department, including hiring an assistant finance director (a new position) and an internal auditor.

Due is eligible for parole in 15 months.
