LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - David Khazai is recognized around Louisville as The Rug Guy. He's been doing television commercials as the owner of the Khazai Rug Gallery for several years, but in his most recent ad he says this Sunday "our store will be closed forever."

If that message sounds familiar to you, you're not alone.

On the Khazai Rug Gallery Facebook page there are comments that say,"this guys has been going out of business for as long as I can recall," and "this guy has had more going out of business sales than the big boys have had blue light specials."

At Khazai's store on Shelbyville Road, customer Jeanie Whatley said, "I kind of thought it's been closing for a while, but it looks for real now."

David Khazai's wife, Sophia Khazai, said her husband gets very frustrated when people suggest he's closed his store before.

"Don't tell him (that)," Sophia Khazai said. "He's going to be so mad."

David Khazai got so fed up with the question, he wrote a response on Facebook and spoke with WAVE 3 News Anchor Shannon Cogan.  He peppered the conversation with messages from his motivational speeches.

"One of the most valuable lessons I have ever learned. When you hear something really listen to hear the message," David Khazai said.

He said people may have thought his TV commercials in the past advertised a store closing, but they weren't. He said those commercials were advertising a bank ordered liquidation.

At one point David Khazai had eight stores in Kentucky and other states, but then the economy plummeted and he closed locations.

He was just 27 years old when he got into the business 30 years ago. He said while he's the fifth generation in his family to be in the rug business, his real passion is software.

"Everybody is anxious to change their circumstances, but not anxious to change themselves," David Khazai said.

After the store closes he said he will devote his time to the software he has developed for the home furnishing industry and maybe take some time off. He said he hasn't had a day off in a year-and-a-half, including holidays.

"Success doesn't happen by accident," David Khazai said. "You have to work at it."

The Khazai's said believe it or not, Sunday will really be the last day for The Rug Guy.

"That's why people are calling me and saying 'are you really closing?'" Sophia Khazai said. "And I say 'yes, we are.'"
