LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Much more than the excitement of horse racing was celebrated Sunday at Churchill Downs. People also celebrated surviving cancer.

Norton Cancer Institute hosted the Survivors' Day Celebration at the track. The event brings together cancer survivors in our community.

Survivors got to watch the races and enjoy a buffet lunch.

"Cancer survivors go through so much with the diagnosis and treatment," said Tammy McClanahan of Norton Cancer Institute. "It effects not only them as individuals, their friends, their family, their caregivers. That's why we are so glad to give them a day of enjoyment at the track.

Sunday was also National Cancer Survivors' Day. This year, the majority of attendees had just recently hit their one-year anniversary of being cancer-free.
