LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - For years there's only been brew at the Louisville Zoo during special craft beer events. That all changed Memorial Day weekend.
Guests now have the option to purchase locally brewed craft beers, Cumberland and Bluegrass Brewing Co. products along with Bud and Budlight.
Domestic beers costs $4.50 for a 12-ounce or guests can upgrade to a microbrew for $6.
"I think it's good to have that option for parents, couples and individuals," David McDonley said.
McDonley brought his family to the zoo Monday. "It's nice to have a craft beverage like this on a beautiful day," he said.
Beer is on tap at three locations. Zoo personnel tapped their first keg Saturday. McDonley's purchase is one of more than 500 beer sales throughout Memorial Day Weekend.
"This is just an additional revenue stream for us and it's all about enhancing the guest experience. We've had a lot of folks say, hey wouldn't it just be awesome if we could have a cold one on a nice hot summer day," said Kyle Shepherd, with the Louisville Zoo.
Since the zoo is mostly self sufficient, only receiving 20 percent of its budget from the city, revenue outlets are crucial.
However, Shepherd acknowledged not all guests will be toasting the new menu option.
"We know some folks are sensitive to serving alcohol at the zoo. We've done extensive research and other zoos in the region offer beer including Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus and St. Louis, so we found there were little to no problems to speak of and virtually no interference with other guests," Shepherd said.
The Louisville Zoo's license does not include the right to sell wine or hard liquor.
