EVANSVILLE, IN (AP) -

Evansville Police are investigating a murder for hire case.

Officers went to 105 E. Riverside Drive around 9:30 Thursday night to check on 68-year-old Gilbert Dossett.  Family members hadn't been able to reach him for several days and were worried.

When police arrived, they found Gilbert had been shot in the head.  No gun was found.

Following an investigation,  Gilbert's estranged wife, 47-year-old Brenda, and 19-year-old Mason Hughes were arrested for murder.

Police say Hughes had recently moved to Evansville and was dating Brenda Dossett's daughter.

They believe Brenda offered to buy a $10,000 car for Hughes in exchange for him killing her estranged husband.

Police say Brenda believed she would receive a $42,000 payout from Gilbert's life insurance policy.  What they say she didn't know is that Gilbert he recently changed the beneficiary and she would no longer receive any money in the event of his death.

Police think they know where the gun used in the murder is located and are getting a search warrant to look for it.

Police say Brenda Dossett's daughter has not been charged in the case at this time.

The prosecutor's office is expected to file formal charges in the case on Thursday.

Both Brenda Dossett and Mason Hughes are being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail on no bond.
