Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start to boating season, but having fun on the open water doesn't mean tossing safety practices overboard. Follow these boating guidelines for a successful season.
Have the proper safety equipment. It probably hasn't been used in a few months, so be sure that everything is working.
Wear a personal floatation device. Officials say that although many boats have life vests on board, passengers don't often wear them. It's especially important for kids to wear life vests.
Communicate. Let someone on shore know where you're heading and when you plan to be back.
Do not underestimate the power of the current. The long winter and Spring storms have the river flowing at three to four MPH, which is faster than usual. Be cautious of debris in the river as well.
Make sure to check river conditions and have proper equipment before you head out.
