Berea will receive a portion of $250,000 in federal grant money to establish a 1.4 acre urban farm.
The Appalachian Regional Commission, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the award in a ceremony on Wednesday as part of the Livable Communities Partnership competition.
Appalachian Regional Commission federal co-chairman Earl F. Gohl praised Berea for winning the grant and said the project will help develop Berea's local food system while providing a gathering place for the community.
The farm will also be an education center. It is less than four blocks from Berea College and Berea Community Schools.
The grant was split between Berea and four cities in other states.
