LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - In a surprising upset, an outspoken community advocate has lost her Metro Council seat to a woman with strong ties to local government.
Jessica Green took 55 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary against Attica Scott. She is the daughter of former councilwoman Dr. Judy Green who was removed from the council over ethics violations.
Green said her mother's name helped her win the seat. During previous interviews Green talked about how accessible her mother was to the community. On election night, Green opened her home to the community for a party.
One of the main issues that helped secure Green's win is her support of a new, nearby Walmart at Dixie Highway and Broadway.
Green, a former prosecutor, said she's going to tackle crime in District 1 and promises to also focus on abandoned homes.
Green is taking over the seat from Scott, the incumbent, who actually took over the seat of Green's mother after she was removed from the council over ethic violations.
"So many people wanted to make this race about my mother and the legacy she left behind," said Green. "My mother has spoken and she has had the last word The people of District One overwhelmingly loved her and supported her."
The campaign got heated between the two. Green admitted the campaign was heated and said she was proud of that. Scott, who had served on the Metro Council for two years, said she was also proud of her run and added that she ran a positive campaign.
