McConnell to testify on Kentucky's heroin problem

FRANKFORT, KY (AP) -

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell will testify during a Senate caucus hearing Wednesday about Kentucky's growing heroin problem.

The Republican leader is scheduled to testify at the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control hearing at 2:30 p.m. EDT in Washington.

Heroin use has become a big issue in Kentucky politics after a report showed heroin overdose deaths in the state increased 650 percent in 2012.

A bill in the General Assembly would have increased penalties for major heroin dealers and expanded the state's substance abuse treatment programs. But the bill died on the legislature's last day despite having the support of leaders from both parties.

In March, McConnell met with local business and medical leaders in Florence to discuss the state's heroin problem.
