LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Disney dreams will come true for a 5-year-old whose siblings were killed in a fire.
In March, WAVE 3 News broke the story about a broken promise made to Tatyana Hughes. From the moment Tatyana awakened from a coma, all she could talk about was a trip to Walt Disney World.
Vacation plans fell through because of several reasons. However, the child still didn't understand.
"Once someone plants something in a child's head. They never forget it. And by that other individual constantly saying, hey you want to go to Disney World? It never left her," Tatyana's grandmother, Marie Clark, said.
Two viewers couldn't ignore the story. Steve and Terri Bass made a generous donation to ensure Tatyana experienced a fairy tale vacation. Southwest Airlines also donated non-stop tickets from Louisville, Kentucky to Orlando, Florida to cover airfaire.
WAVE 3 News surprised the family with vacation plans in front of Oxmoor Center's Disney Store.
"We're so, so grateful for the opportunity. We're so grateful for Southwest and the people out there who came forward and WAVE 3 News. It just lets you know there are still some good people out there," Clark said.
Steve and Terri Bass, who declined going on camera, also made sure the family had enough spending money so the trip didn't cost them a dime.
Shannon Winters, a travel agent with The Travel Authority, donated much of her time to organize the logistics of the trip.
It's a lot to comprehend for a family who lost three children.
"This is a true blessing. It really is a true blessing and we're so humbled by the support of the community and the people who made this happen. It's overwhelming," Clark said.
Tatyana was hurt in the January 4 arson that killed her three siblings, Trinity Hughes, age 2, Tyrese Hughes, age 4, and Tai'zah Hughes, age 6, in a home on Ealy Street in New Albany.
Police arrested Cody Cashion, 18, Kylie Jenks, 19, Shelby Makowsky, 18 and a 17-year-old juvenile in connection to the fire where investigators said Cashion fired a flare into the house.
Tatyana and her siblings were visiting the house. The person police said Cashion intended to be the target was not home.
For Tatyana and her family, a Disney vacation is no longer part of the child's imagination.
