LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Two well-known candidates in West Louisville are facing each other in one of the city's most contested primary races.
Jessica Green, the daughter of former Metro councilwoman Judy Green, is running against incumbent Attica Scott. Scott replaced the elder Green after she was removed from the council for violating ethics rules.
Green, a former prosecutor, said her mother's legacy is helping, not hurting, on the campaign trail in the First District.
"The Green name is synonymous with accessibility, the Green name is synonymous with longevity here in the community," Jessica Green said. "I am proud to carry the Green name."
Scott said the district was scarred emotionally after Judy Green's ethics violations, and credited herself with building relationships in the district.
No Republican filed, so the winner of Tuesday's Democratic primary is almost certain to win the seat, which carries a four-year term.
The two have disagreed over a Walmart store planned for the old Phillip Morris site at 18th Street and West Broadway. The area is several blocks outside the district.
Scott was critical of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., over its wages and hiring practices. She said this week that she would be more supportive if the company hires 225 workers for the Louisville store from surrounding neighborhoods. Green has welcomed the planned store.
Green said her top priority if elected would be reducing crime. Scott, who has served on the council for more than two years, said she would continue efforts to clean up abandoned property and fight illegal dumping if reelected.
"I bring experience, which is important for folks in District 1," Scott said. "I'm someone who has the two-and-a-half years experience building relationships with other council members."
Both candidates said they had been campaigned across the district, which runs along the Ohio River south from West Broadway and includes the Parkland, Chickasaw and Park DuValle neighborhoods of Louisville.
