Duncan wants Indiana NCLB updates

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan wants Indiana officials to provide regular updates on how the state will maintain its waiver from the No Child Left Behind Act.

An email obtained Friday by The Associated Press shows Duncan requested the briefings during a call with schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz this week. Duncan's staff notified Indiana last week that its waiver was being placed on conditional status because of concerns over monitoring of low-performing schools, teacher evaluations and other areas.

Indiana is one of 10 states granted waivers from No Child Left Behind. It has a June 30 deadline to submit a plan to resolve the issues.

The State Board of Education will consider the issue Tuesday. At stake is control over more than $200 million in federal Title I education dollars.
