Monday is the last day to register for a foster parent informational open house being hosted by the Indiana Department of Child Services.
Currently foster parents take care of 334 abused or neglected children in Gibson, Knox, Pike, Posey, Vanderburgh and Warrick Counties.
DCS is looking for more people in southwestern Indiana who might be interested in fostering a child and want more information, or don't know where to start.
At the open house, prospective parents will be able to talk to parents currently involved in the foster care system and hear their first-hand experiences. Current foster parents are also encouraged to attend and bring a friend.
Jeff Gray and his wife moved to a bigger house in Evansville last year because they wanted to give fostering a try. Seven months later, they have seven kids in the house. Their two plus five foster kids.
Gray says knowing how thankful the kids are that they have a stable home, "As they sit here, they confide in you more and more," Gray says. "And they come in to you and say 'Thank you. It's helping by talking to you and thank you for letting me live here.'"
The foster parent informational open house will take place on Tuesday, May 13, at the Olivet Presbyterian Church in Evansville from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
Childcare will be provided and light refreshments will be served.
To RSVP, call (812) 424-6054 by the end of Monday.
