911 calls released in officer-involved shooting

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Evansville Police have released the 911 calls from an officer-involved shooting.

It happened earlier this month on the city's southeast side.

On Monday, Sgt. Jason Cullum said that they believe the suspect, Terry Daugherty, intended to commit suicide by cop.

Around 5:30 p.m. on April 22, a woman at a home on S. Alvord called 911 saying her kids' father was threatening her.

The woman told dispatch the suspect, Terry Daugherty, had just bonded out of jail on strangulation charges, and she had a restraining order against him.

Dispatch told her to stay at the home on Alvord and that police would meet her there, but the woman ended up calling back, she says, 45 minutes later. She told police Daugherty was in her garage.

Police say they got to the scene within two minutes.

Officials say once two officers arrived, Daugherty ran carrying two knives.

The officers told him to drop his weapons, but say he didn't.

Police say one of the officers shot Daugherty in the torso.

Evansville Police say the first 911 call was considered a low priority call, because the woman was not in immediate danger, since Daugherty was texting her and not making direct contact.

They also say a wait time of 30 minutes, or so, is normal for that kind of run.

Daugherty is now facing several charges, including intimidation with a weapon.
