LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Probable Kentucky Derby 140 favorite California Chrome arrived at Churchill Downs on Monday afternoon.

The chestnut colt backed off a truck at barn 20 at around 12:45 p.m. He is trained by 77 year-old Art Sherman. Sherman is expected to be on the backside Tuesday morning.

His assistant and son, Alan, oversaw the Santa Anita Derby champ's arrival.

"Oh it's a big relief, I have been kind of nervous about him traveling and the storms and everything," Sherman said. "I didn't know how bumpy the plane was going to be, but I guess it wasn't too bad and now he's in his stall, so everything is relaxed now. He's traveled fine, he's a pretty cool horse, he doesn't get stirred up about much."

William Delgado is California Chrome's exercise rider. He was nervous all day as the colt flew across the country for the first time.

"For him, it's like I was telling Alan this morning, breathe man, talk, I'll be alright once he gets here. So now that he's here, I told him, I can breathe now and yeah, it's exciting and I just can't wait to get on him tomorrow," Delgado told reporters.

The horse has won four straight races, including wins in the Grade II San Felipe and the Grade I Santa Anita Derby by a combined 12 1/2 lengths.

"It's pretty scary, the way he's just been drawing off from those horses, and those are good horses behind him," Sherman said. "It's not like, they're not giving up, he's got that turn of foot and he opens up four on them before they even know what happened."

California Chrome is expected to gallop around the Churchill Downs track for the first time on Tuesday morning.
