GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) - Vacant for nine years, there are now plans to tear down the old Patoka High School in Gibson County.
Town Council President, Charles Heflin, says the building was built back in the 1920's.
First, it was a school and then it was used for commercial space.
Heflin says the current owner bought the property in the 2005 and plans on building duplexes on the lot over the next ten years, "We understand the building has history but we also understand that its an eyesore to the community. It's a safety hazard. If anyone was near the building and any of it deteriorated, they could get injured. We would just like to see it gone for the safety of our community and to beautify the community.
Heflin says the town has applied for a grant but if community members would also like to help with the project, they can contact the town attorney.
The building should be gone by the end of the year.
