MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - A heartbreaking story is unfolding in Orange Mound, where a 7-year-old girl woke up to find that both of her parents had been shot and killed in the living room. Three other kids were also in the home at the time.

Memphis Police Department is investigating the shooting as a double homicide. It happened at the family's home on the 2600 block of Enterprise Avenue.

The little girl called police around 7 a.m. Thursday.

Family members told WMC Action News 5's Nick Kenney that the victims are identified as James, 26, and Danielle Alexander, 23.

Family also believes the two were murdered because of a fight Danielle was involved in last week. The whole fight was posted to her Facebook page on April 19. MPD says its homicide unit is investigating all possibilities.

"My poor grandchildren," said Danielle's mother, Dajuna England. "Both parents. Mommy and daddy both gone. I can't even imagine what it's like to lose both your parents at one time."

"Especially tragic like this," continued Danielle's aunt, Lydia Babb. "You know, not just die from old age or sickness or cancer but violence. That's what needs to stop. One thing after another. The violence going from one end to another. From one neighborhood to another. Families losing whole families. Kids without a mother and father."

The other children in the home at the time of the shooting were 2, 4, and 5 years old. They, along with the 7-year-old girl, were taken away from the scene and are now with family members.

"One thing that came first in their life was their kids," added Babb.

"They loved their children. They loved them," said England.

Police say they now have the delicate job of finding out what, if anything, the children heard. According to investigators, there was no sign of forced entry. Surveillance cameras are position around the house, but it is not known if they were recording.

James Alexander is described as a landscaper and a good father. Danielle is described as athletic and protective of her children. The two were sweethearts since junior high; they married in February.

"Don't you think the kids need to have closure knowing what happened to their mom and dad and know why this happened?" said Babb. "And don't you think everybody else needs to have closure?"
