Members of the Rotary Club of Warrick County are organizing a Walk for Literacy Saturday in Newburgh.
Warrick County School Corporation Superintendent Brad Schneider says proceeds from the event will support the Accelerated Reader programs in Warrick County elementary and middle schools.
The family walk begins at the Old Lock and Dam at 8:30 a.m., with registration starting at 7:30. Participants may walk either one or two miles on the Newburgh Walking trail along the Ohio River.
It's $10 per person or $25 for a family of four. Registration includes a t-shirt.
Participants will also be given a ticket. After the walk, they'll be able to "vote" for their favorite elementary or middle school by placing their ticket in a box representing that school.
The school with the most "votes" based upon percentage of enrollment will get additional books for their AR program, Schneider said.
Several familiar characters, including Clifford the Big Red Dog are expected to be at the walk.
This is the first year for the event. More than 250 people are already registered.
Participants are asked to park at Newburgh Elementary and utilize a shuttle service to get to the start of the walk.
