Man fatally shot by deputy identified

SUBURBAN BOCA RATON, FL (WFLX) - A screwdriver-wielding man was fatally shot by a Palm Beach County deputy, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators say a deputy responded a few minutes after 9:30 p.m. to reports of a disturbance at the Tuscany Pointe apartment complex in the 2300 block of Camino del Mar.

Authorities say they found a man, later identified as 28-year-old Matthew Pollow, outside the complex and they ordered him to remove his hands from his pockets.

Detectives say he placed everything on a nearby car including a screwdriver.

Authorities say the deputy drew his weapon at this point because Pollow had a 'very disturbed' look on his face.

That's when the sheriff's office says Pollow picked up the screwdriver and charged at the deputy and the deputy opened fire.

Neighbors say Pollow lived in the complex with another woman for at least the last two years.

"They were very quiet, the man and the lady. You never seen the man really, she worked every day, like, you could see her come and go, come and go," said neighbor Ronald Jane.

"I'm hoping it's an isolated incidence and not indicative of this neighborhood," neighbor Kenny Spahn said. He added, "I think it's just a weird coincidence, hopefully."

Neighbors say Pollow drove a white BMW convertible and that car was towed out of the complex this morning.

The name of the deputy involved will likely not be released until at least Friday.
