LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - We all know die hard University of Louisville fans will never bleed blue. But will they cheer on the University of Kentucky in hopes of bringing the national championship trophy home to the state?
While it is probably safe to assume there are not very many Cardinals fans in Lexington, Louisville is a city that is often divided when it comes to supporting UK or UofL.
Since UofL is no longer in the game for a spot in the National Championship, should Cards fans support the state team? A viewer named Jim Denny says yes! Denny contacted WAVE 3 News after starting an online petition. He's asking Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer to declare Friday as "Wildcat Blue" Day in the City of Louisville.
Mayor Fischer encouraged fans to wear red in support of UofL's men and women's team.
We asked the Mayor's office if there were any plans to encourage people to wear blue. His office told us no, but the Mayor is cheering on the Cats to bring home a national title for the state.
Denny admits with all the worlds problems, this is a petty issue but, he'd like to see more support.
"Lexingtonians are not Louisvillians, but Louisvillians are Kentuckians and it's the University of Kentucky and it's the statewide land grant university," said Denny. "From an official capacity, I think he should show support."
The Mayor has wished the Wildcats the best of luck on his twitter page.
So far, Denny has 184 signatures. He's hoping for 1,000. To view or sign the petition, click here.
