LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - After losing by three points to Maryland and missing out on the women's Final Four, University of Louisville Head Coach Jeff Walz came to the podium and thanked the fans before he did anything else.
A screaming crowd of 14,002 fans came out to the KFC Yum! Center Tuesday night to cheer on the UofL women.
From the youngest of the Cardinal faithful to longtime fans of Coach Walz and company, a good crowd attended a pre-game pep rally to wish the Cards well in hopes they would take down the solid Maryland team. Fan Tammie Logsdon said of the Cards, "They've done a lot together and they've achieved a lot and hopefully they'll do it again tonight."
Fan Cindy Sedoris said, "I love the Schimmel sisters and I think they're exciting to watch!"
"We love all the seniors," Susan Lawson agreed. "This is their unfinished business they need to take care of it."
Fan Ken Davis said of the Final Four, "We already have our tickets to Nashville."
Fans took that confidence into the KFC Yum! Center and from tip-off it was back and forth in the first half with both teams flying down the floor. It has the huge home crowd getting loud and on their feet. The Cards led in the first half 36-32, but Maryland stormed back with authority in the second half. The Terps broke out a ten point lead. But as usual, the Cards fought to the end with a final score of 76-73.
After the game fans said they had never been so proud of Senior Guard Shoni Schimmel who had 31 points. They were amazed by her last minute heroics. She hit back to back three pointers to bring the Cards within three, but the final one would not fall.
After the close loss Card fan Vicki Sams said, "I'm a Louisville graduate and I love them!" she continued, "they are always near and dear to my heart and no matter what, I am throwing the L's up!"
Fan Beth Tanner said, "It's a great team and full of energy," she said. "We love watching them and we love everything about it (the season), it was a blast!"
Cards fan Tim Conrad added, "They're fantastic and I couldn't be more proud of them especially the Schimmel sisters just fantastic!" The Louisville Women ended the season 33-5.
