LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The ride isn't over for the University of Louisville Cardinals. The men basketball team fell short of defending their national championship, but the women have advanced to the Elite Eight and are just one win away from their second consecutive trip to the Final Four.
On UofL's campus, there's a common feeling among students.
"Oh my Goodness, I'm so tired of the Cats," said Hannah Held, a freshman.
"I don't even want to talk about the Cats," said Kevin Loeser, a fellow freshman.
Students are thrilled to still be able to talk about their team.
"The ladies are looking great on the court and off the court," said freshman David Wayne Southers.
The UofL women's basketball team is advancing to the Elite 8 after beating LSU on Sunday. They'll be taking on Maryland Tuesday night in the Midwest Regional finals.
"They are bringing the University of Louisville up to a national perspective so, we are excited for them," said Connor Kriz.
"The men get all the talk so I think it's great the women step out and get the fame," said Kevin Loeser, another freshman.
Coach Jeff Walz says his team is ready. The goal to make it to Nashville for the national championship, but Walz said he knows that they have a tall task at hand against a very talented Maryland team.
Walz is no stranger to Maryland either. He was an assistant coach at Maryland several years ago and when the Terrapins won a national championship.
"We're gonna be prepared, we are gonna play hard, and we are excited," said Walz.
"We're looking forward to playing," said senior guard Shoni Schimmel. "It's not just our fans getting excited we are excited to play."
"It is going to be a challenge, but I think our team is up for it and our coaches are going to have us prepared," said Sara Hammond, a junior center.
Tickets are available for the game, which tips off at 7 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center. Walz is hoping at least 14,000 people will come out for a great game and cheer on the Cardinals.
