EPD launching new crime alert program

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Evansville police are preparing to launch a new program so they can alert residents of crime in their area.

'Next Door' is a social media network for crime alerts that are specific to your neighborhood.

Members of the United Neighborhoods of Evansville received a briefing this week on how the website works. Once you sign up, the system verifies that you actually live in the neighborhood that you registered with.

The site then becomes a group messaging center.

Members of the neighborhood can discuss topics like recent car break-ins or ask about things such as good baby sitters in the neighborhood or even alert neighbors about a lost pet.

Several neighborhoods already use the service and say they've seen great success.

"People get on there to see what's happening with the road and what's blocked off now," said Susan Harp of the Oak Hill Neighborhood Association. "We had some break-ins, some car thefts we were all able to get on there and share where these were happening so everyone was alerted to them."

Evansville Police tell us by next week they'll have the ability to post and send alerts to specific neighborhoods.

If you have the app on your smartphone it's almost instantaneous.
