LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Whether you choose to wear red or blue Friday night, Kentucky State Police just want to make sure you accessorize with a seat belt.
Starting at 11 a.m., troopers gave out free UofL and UK t-shirts to the 200 people they see buckled up in the student parking lot of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The troopers asked fans to sign a seat belt pledge promising they'll always buckle up while traveling.
"We have a very heated match tonight and we wanted to make sure that we can use that theme to carry on the message of seat belt safety across the commonwealth of Kentucky," said KSP Sgt. Michael Webb.
"Man I think this is wonderful. Public safety. UofL. Man, I love this," said one fan as he drove away.
While it's all fun right now passing out the shirts the reality behind the slogan, "Never miss a game. Buckle Up." is very real
"We've had 49 persons die on our roadways this year because they were not restrained," said Webb. "It's just a very senseless act because it's such a preventable death."
Louisville Metro Police joined KSP in reminding people to buckle up and be safe. It was just the beginning of a long day for police.
