Renovations could be on the way for Old National Bank Events Plaza

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Renovations could be on the way for the Old National Bank Events Plaza in Downtown Evansville.

Right now, Vanderburgh County commissioners are waiting on Governor Mike Pence to guarantee the funding.

As soon as Pence signs the bill, commissioners say work will get underway. They hope the renovations will make a good impression on visitors to the plaza.

Commissioner Marsha Abell says the Exhibit Hall needs to be recarpeted and will cost half the $500,000 that will go toward the Hall's renovations. New dishes, boiler work and other maintenance are also on deck.

The funding will come through a 2% food and beverage tax that needs Pence's approval.

Abell says she's most excited about getting the outside bridge connected to the future downtown convention hotel.

"That's why we've got to get it fixed up. It's got to look good when we have that first convention so those people will tell other people, 'Yeah, it's a good place to go,'" Abell says.

She says as soon as the funding is guaranteed and the commissioners approve, work will get underway.
